Shelfies #18: Ganzeer
Yes, I very much judge books by their covers.
Ganzeer’s Shelfie
JENNIFER GOVERNMENT by Max Barry: First read this in Cairo in the early aughts, and it fast became my favorite novel. I knew nothing of the book or Barry, but it was the combination of the cover and title that attracted me to it. Yes, I very much judge books by their covers. I have yet to read it since that first time though, and have yet to see how it holds up. Perhaps something I ought to remedy soon (but what about all the new unread books taunting me at every turn?!)
THE MAN IN THE HIGH CASTLE by Philip K. Dick: Beautiful 1962 hardback edition I picked up from Book Thug Nation in Brooklyn (one of my all-time favorite bookshops) back in 2014, on recommendation from my friend designer/archivist/reader Josh MacPhee. My first ever PKD read (very late to the game, I know).
NORMAL by Warren Ellis: This was my favorite read of 2016, and this particular copy was signed by Warren in person when he swung through LA that year.
FUTURES by various: A collection of seven short science fiction stories, each in its own sort-of-chapbook/zine, collected in a box and produced by Radix Media, the wonderful co-publishers of my serialized graphic novel The Solar Grid. I cherish this beautiful, independently-produced boxset, despite Radix Media rejecting my CRISPR Than You story for it, the story that would eventually end up in The Big Book of Cyberpunk.
THE ELECTRIC STATE by Simon Stalenhag: Had never heard of Simon Stalenhag, but picked this one a few years back on the strength of the art alone. Very concept-arty, lots of world-building imagery, a rather unusual book, the story of which I admit I have yet to actually read. I am now seeing reports however that the Russo brothers together with Netflix are adapting it to the screen, the biggest budget Netflix has ever assigned to a production according to some reports. So I may finally remedy my ignorance of the source material before I see what other creative minds have decided to do with it.
